A practical guide to split pages in half

When splitting down the middle beats re-scanning

Two-up PDFs usually come from a book laid flat on a copier or a duplex scanner that captured facing pages on one sheet. Re-scanning page by page is slow and risks cracking a spine, so cutting the existing file in half is almost always the faster route. This tool shines when every sheet holds two logical pages of the same orientation, most often A3 landscape holding two portrait A4s, or A4 holding two A5s. If only some sheets are two-up, separate them first, because a uniform cut will slice any true single page in two.

Getting a clean, centered cut

Start with the default center line and check a spread that has content close to the middle, since that is where an off-center cut shows first. If text is clipped or a sliver of the neighboring page bleeds in, move the cut a couple of millimeters until each half is clean. Choose vertical for side-by-side pages and horizontal for pages stacked top and bottom. For books scanned at a slight tilt, the cut alone will not straighten them, so plan a second pass rather than fighting the cut position.

Chaining half-splitting with cleanup steps

Splitting is usually the first move in restoring a scanned book, not the last. After the sheets are halved, run deskew to correct any feeder tilt, then crop to shave the dark scanner border that framed the original spread. If the pages are photos of text rather than real text, finish with OCR so the rebuilt document is searchable. Doing these in order matters: cut first so each page is analyzed on its own, then straighten, then crop, so every step works on a single clean page instead of a crowded spread.

Frequently asked questions

Can it find the fold automatically?
It defaults the cut to the exact center of the sheet, which is right for most two-up scans. If your original was trimmed unevenly or the spine sits off to one side, nudge the cut line manually and the preview updates before you export.
What happens to a cover or single page mixed into the scan?
Every sheet is cut the same way, so a genuine single page would be halved too. Pull those pages out with the extract or delete tool first, split the two-up body, then merge the covers back on afterward.
Does the split add a visible line or border down the page?
No. Each half is written as a full, standalone page at its own trimmed size, so there is no seam, gutter shadow or leftover margin from the original sheet.
In what order do the two halves come out?
For a left-to-right layout the left half is placed first and the right half second, so a spread reads in natural sequence. Flip the reading-order option and the right half leads, which is what you want for right-bound documents.
